Southwest Edmonton has been left waiting for over two years for a decision to be made on the vacant hospital site south of Ellerslie Road and west of 127 Street.
This ongoing delay isn't just holding up a piece of valuable land area, but it's blocking the final buildout of essential arterial roads across Heritage Valley. Without a decision, we cannot connect Heritage Valley Trail directly to Anthony Henday Drive, leaving neighborhoods like Desrochers, Chappelle, Paisley, and Graydon Hill trapped in daily gridlock on 141 Street SW and James Mowatt Trail.

RE: Unlocking SW Edmonton Hospital Lands to Build Critical Road and Rail Connections
Dear Minister Long and Minister Dreeshen,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the continued land indecision surrounding the provincial hospital site south of Ellerslie Road, at 127 Street SW. For years, Edmonton's rapidly growing communities have been promised a full-service regional hospital to address healthcare shortages. Halting this project leaves South-West Edmonton underserved while our population continues to be the fastest growing in Edmonton.
Crucially, this ongoing planning freeze creates a cascading roadblock for our regional transportation network, including road bottlenecks throughout Heritage Valley, issues with the Capital Line LRT Expansion, and limited neighbourhood access in many areas.
Unresolved land rights-of-way prevent full corridor expansion, creating severe gridlock along 141 St, Ellerslie Rd, Heritage Valley Trail, and James Mowatt Trail, especially during peak hours. This causes delays for all emergency services. Failing to finalize the hospital site boundaries threatens the LRT transit corridor, causing Phase 2 stalls in the joint provincial-municipal transit integration with the provincial rail plan.
Furthermore, residents in Paisley and Graydon Hill face severe access constraints with limited entry and exit points onto major arterials like Ellerslie Road and 141 Street SW. Creating secondary access roads relies on surrounding land-use certainty.
Our community cannot afford to have healthcare facilities, mass transit, and road expansions stalled by administrative apathy.
I respectfully request that the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton take immediate, coordinated action to:
• Reaffirm and fund the long-overdue South West Edmonton Hospital project with a firm development timeline.
• Finalize parcel boundaries to formally protect the LRT right-of-way for the future Capital Line extension to Desrochers.
• Release adjacent land rights-of-way to fully develop Heritage Valley Trail SW from the traffic circle to Anthony Henday Drive.
• Construct secondary access points for the communities of Paisley and Graydon Hill to Heritage Valley Trail.
